Regeneration and reparative process
Shockwave therapy is a treatment used by your Chartered Physiotherapist to provide fast pain relief for a range of different painful musculoskeletal conditions. Together with being a non-surgical therapy with no need for painkillers makes it an ideal therapy to speed up recovery and cure various indications causing acute or chronic pain.
Shockwave is an acoustic wave, not electrical, which carries high energy to painful spots and musculoskeletal tissues with subacute, subchronic and chronic conditions. The energy promotes regeneration and reparative processes of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues. While the treatment may cause some discomfort/pain, it is typically well tolerated as treatment time is short.
_ The Benefits
How It Works.
Shockwave works by creating a pro-inflammatory response. This means that the healing process can be accelerated by converting a chronic inflammatory condition into an acute inflammatory condition. By doing this, the following beneficial effects can be created:
- New blood vessel formation
- Reversal of Chronic Inflammation
- Stimulation of Collagen Production (tissue healing/growth)
- Breaking down of Calcium Deposits
All of the above can lead to a reduction in pain and therefore increased function/mobility. Common conditions that can be treated using shockwave therapy include but are not limited to:
- Planter Fasciitis
- Jumper’s Knee
- Painful Shoulder
- Tennis Elbow
- Heel Spur
- Insertional Pain
- Chronic Tendinopathy
- Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome
- Calcifications
- Hip/Neck/Back Pain
